Cultivating Joy Through Jesus Christ

And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed…keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested.” – 1st Chronicles 4:10 (KJV)

Jabez, understanding the power of his name, knowing that his mother had borne him in sorrow and the effect it would have on him and his future generations, pleaded with God so that he could cultivate joy instead of sorrow. He wanted his territory to be enlarged (land and every resource), God’s hand to be on him, and also to keep him away from evil.

In ancient times, especially, a person’s name was their character in life and the way they were remembered after death. Jabez did not want to be associated with sorrow or grief. He pleaded with God to change his circumstances for the better.

Proverbs 22:1 (KJV) says, “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.” Favour includes respect from people and grace from God, resulting in wisdom and wealth; however, a good name must be chosen first. Jabez decided not to be defined by a name of pain and sorrow.

So, as we live this life, allow your name to bring you, and to the people around you, joy.

Testimony

Looking back at our family’s name and seeing how God hand-picked us and brought us out of darkness into His marvellous light, we can sing a song of joy. It only happened by His grace and power, so we are no longer defeated. God never fails.
